Episode 94

Diabetes and brownies for breakfast

Lynne Bowman is living proof that you can cook, eat, sleep, laugh, and walk your way out of type 2 diabetes, along with other chronic ailments. And, as befits “a snarky grandma”, she has strong opinions about the food industry and we should and shouldn’t be eating.

Don’t worry, she’s not going to beat the drum for any particular diet though she tends towards plant-based meals except when she craves animal protein. All she asks of you, of us, is to read labels and skip things that come in bags and boxes.

She shares my feelings about eating and sleep;

“Your body cannot do what it's supposed to do if you're not doing what you need to do sleep wise as well as foodwise. They affect each other completely. If you're eating badly, you'll sleep badly. And if you're sleeping badly, the science says you will want to eat badly as well.”

My sentiments exactly and one of the principals of my Power of 5 system.

We discussed intermittent fasting, fermented foods, (I recommend Holly Howe to learn how to make your own or which brands you can trust to buy from), and the lies about diabetes.

Greg “our habits today are creating our future six months from now, a year from now, five years from now. And as the years accumulate on the already gone side and the ones ahead of us are fewer, for me it becomes more and more important for me to make sure that I do everything I can to enjoy what's left. And that includes being healthy.”

Lynne: “And there's no way really to particularly enjoy what's left without your health.”

 Her latest best-selling book, Brownies for Breakfast, A Cookbook for Diabetics and the People Who Love Them is a cool, fun, beautiful, guidebook for anybody who wants to reverse chronic disease and eat healthy. Plus, because she's a grandma, expect all kinds of stories and advice along with the recipes: interior/exterior design, beauty tips, style, hormones, parenting, and the one thing most of us get totally wrong with our first couple of marriages.

And she took all the photos herself! It really is a beautiful book full of tasty, easy to prepare foods. I know, I have it.

Why this chubby, bologna and mayonnaise sandwich eating child of the 50's ever ended up with a passion for all things health, fitness, and longevity is a mystery. I wanted to be a doctor as a child but my gifts were not in lab sciences but words and making science easy to understand. (I'm a science and research geek)
My soul insists on freedom and that drives the work I do with women. Freedom from disease, limitation, self-doubt--whatever form it takes--informs what I create and how I coach.
