Episode 3

Everything is Food

This is not about the song from the "Popeye" movie.

My version of Everything is Food is more metaphor meets actual life.

It's like philosophy made practical.

Did you know that your thoughts, what media you consume, and what comestible food you eat all cause many of the same chemicals to be released in your body?

If you listen for food metaphors in your day to day conversations, podcasts, even the books you read, you'll realize we associate food and feeding with every aspect of life. The significance of this is, everything is then food.

You "consume" information and information can "consume" your psyche good or bad.

Our legs turn to jelly, he or she is a rotten apple, her office needs to be spiced up. Food and feelings are unconsciously tied.

Did you know that an exhausting relationship may make you sick to your stomach with the same ferocity as an old piece of chicken? But you may keep eating because on some level that relationship feeds a need in you, even as you starve for a bit of love.

Armed with this kind of information means we can bring awareness to what we are consuming literally and figuratively and make sure that our choices feed us well for the moment and for our years to come.

A simple exercise to help you put this into practice: get mindful of all the people you interact with,

the messages and media you consume,

the food choices you make for every meal and snack

and ask, does this add to my health, my life, my joy?

Why this chubby, bologna and mayonnaise sandwich eating child of the 50's ever ended up with a passion for all things health, fitness, and longevity is a mystery. I wanted to be a doctor as a child but my gifts were not in lab sciences but words and making science easy to understand. (I'm a science and research geek)
My soul insists on freedom and that drives the work I do with women. Freedom from disease, limitation, self-doubt--whatever form it takes--informs what I create and how I coach.
